Stablemates have suggested compiling list of maxims that could be used as
another handicapping tool. I will compile such a list and upload same for
those interested. May I suggest that you post any you feel are useful.
Please feel free to add explanatory notes, if needed. I will edit and
compile.
One suggested already follows. I've added a second (Harvey Pack fans
will recognize this one).
* Never bet a three-year-old highweight going against elders
* Never bet as a favorite a horse being asked to do something he has not
done before

This is a WONDERFUL idea!
Here are a few more:
* Never bet a horse after a long layoff
* Never bet a first time starter (my faith in that one is shaken)
* Bet on horses who are first or second time lasix users, especially if past
performance indicates possibility of bleeding or dropping back
* Never bet on a horse to win who has 'seconditis'
* Never bet a horse going up in class against well-established contenders
* Never bet a horse in post positions 11 or 12 to win
I am not sure that I stated those very well... if someone can improve on it,
feel free.

but don't cross off from your exactas the stake horses who come from Charlie

Yes, the really great trainers know when a horse is ready, and since they are
running in the top races, they don't tend to enter a horse after a layoff
unless they KNOW they are ready.
People who know trainers can also tell which shippers to bet on and which to
ignore. This is often very useful... but unfortunately I don't know enough
to take advantage of that.

I take exception to never bet a horse after a long layoff. Racing has
changed so much in the last
10 years, that often the healthiest horse in the lower claiming levels is the
horse that has been
off resting. Combine that with a trainer whose speciality is LO winners or
has previously won off
a LO or as a first time starter(Cramer) and you usuallyhave a pretty good
bet(overlay).
I agree with others that said there is often money to be made by betting
against "Rules". But
would also add that the legitimate ones should be respected but not cast in
stone.
With that said, here are some I have read and generally apply:
1. Dont bet on a graded stakes winner running in an allowance race.(Huge
underlays & Not well
meant)
2. Scared money rarely wins.
3. Don't chase your losses.
4. Grade I races are won by grade I horses. (not as good as it use to be
since there are so
many grade I races now.

The one thing that becomes clear about maxims, is that as soon as one is
posted, there is someone who contradicts. The quality of the handicappers
on this board has improved vastly.
About three seasons ago I was playing Gulfdstream. I found an allowance
race with two maidens running. Both horses produced the highest Sartin
figures. How many Maxims come to mind in this situation? Many already
mentioned here. I threw them both out. They came in 1+2 and paid about
900.00 in the exacta. Looking back at the situation, the field was weak, the
two trainers were competent. I was the one who blew it. That was the last
time I blindly followed a Maxim.
My maxim is : In horse racing , the only absolute is the take-out. :-)

Maxims? Try these. <IMHO>
*DON'T bet a 10lb (triple bug) apprentice jockey. He's only learning and
there's SO MUCH to learn.
*DON'T bet a 7lb (double bug) apprentice going a route (esp. in the slop)
unless he's on the speed.
*DO bet HOT 5lb (single bug) apprentices esp. going a route if his horse
might be legitimate.
*DON'T bet a last start DNF after a layoff even at a class drop except
bleeders coming back w/ Lasix.
*DON'T bet a frozen track it will not be a fair race.
*DON'T advance bet races at the track. Some useful info may come out of the
Paddock, the Post Parade, the Claim Box or the Warmup.
HINTS:
GET a condition book from the Racing Secretary's office. LEARN IT. And also
begin to think from a trainer's perspective.
WATCH the claim box and learn to interpret the signs. All claims must be in
15 min. before post, so you should still have plenty of time to bet.
HORSES without tongue ties or ponies during warmup are very often signs of an
unsavvy trainer. As are trainers making excessive rider changes.
MUCH CAN BE LEARNED FROM:
1. Early AM visits to the main track. Even (or esp.) in the dark!
2. Early AM visits to the track kitchen w/ ears open.
3. A Friend on the backside.
>BTW I cash about 75% of my bets, but I only bet 10 - 12 races a year and I
ONLY bet what I KNOW not what I handicap!<
Best regards,
Jockey Fl

Perhaps it's too obvious, but the best "maxim" I've encountered is to not bet
every race! To paraphrase Tom Ainslie, never bet any race in which the
relative abilities of the entrants are unknown. Concentate, instead, on the
races comprised solely of horses with recent activity on the local curcuit.

One that's rather obvious but often overlooked - look for jockeys with double
calls and select the horse they chose (unless, of course, the jock rides
"first call" for that trainer). That horse may not win, but it will beat the
other horse 90% of the time.

When it comes to maxims, I agree with the person who said "Never say never."
Rigid thinking does not belong at the track, friends.
On the other hand...
Never bet a Grade 1 winner (usually after a layoff) running in an allowance
race. It's usually just a tune-up and in some cases the horse has gone bad.
Believe me, as maxims go, this one's pretty solid.
And while I'm putting my two cents in...not never, but how about RARELY bet a
low, low level claimer who won its last out to repeat. They do it less than
ten percent of the time. Not that great a bet, huh?

everywhere else? The one time I tried eliminating shippers in my betting, I
dropped a bundle. Shippers coming to Nfld, especially from the Meadows, seem
to do quite well out here.
Oh... and, like the lady said, if a horse winks at you in the post parade, no
matter what the odds are, BET IT!!!

And one more strange one...
If the name of the horse is too coincidental to believe, put down a couple
bucks on it. For example:
You're having an affair with a woman named Shirley.
You open the Form and find a horse in the sixth at Santa Anita named Tempting
Shirl.
Bet the damn horse.
That's fate.
A real life example from the other day at SA. A mile race,
a bunch of young'uns, most of the stretching out for the
first time. Not my strong suit, handicapping-wise. One of the horses is
named Steps in Time. Well, my son loves
the movie "Mary Poppins," and his favorite number from
the film is "Step in Time." I mean, he loves it. Asks me
to cue up that part of the movie, asks me to play the song
on the piano so he can dance around. So I bet the horse.
Long story short, horse places, pays something like 9.60, I
cash a nice ticket.
When it's too weird, bet it.

I cashed a nice ticket once that I can partially attribute to coincidence.
19 September, 1993. I was at the Keenland Yearling Sales, and picked up a
form so that I could place a bet at the simulcast. I'm a lover of spicy
foods and *hot* peppers, and much to my surprise I saw a horse in the 7th at
Belmont, $30k Allowance, named Tabasco Cat. I've been known to consume half
a bottle of Tabasco Sauce at one meal. I decided I was gonna bet that horse
no matter what ... and after handicapping the race he came out as my top
choice anyway.
Needless to say, I cashed a decent win ticket that day, and several times
after that!

If your horse won't stand, teach him; if he won't learn, sell him; if he

OK, they work in the UK, no idea how they'll do here, but...
* Back a horse that has won in the last 7 days in any race 9-12f
* Watch the 2YO foaling dates - take the early ones early on, but expect
reversals of fortune later.
* NEVER be put off by the odds - there's no such thing as 'too high to win'.
* Back any horse who beats two previously placed maidens first time out.
* A 2yo that can win @7f stay 12f as a 3YO approx 75% of the time.
Anyone interested in full details on 7 day winners mail me.

<lol>
Now that everyone's shutting down for the winter, LOTS of shippers are
showing up at Northfield, and it's bloody well hard to find a race that
doesn't have at least one, and most of them are quite highly ranked. Also,
the purses seem to be getting bigger by the week (also, probably, as a result
of the other tracks closing). Should be a good winter for my pocketbook. :)
Rob
PS-- Just sent off the registration for Federal Hill's Harness handicapping
software. At the risk of alerting my competition, I promised myself I'd
register it if I won enough money at the track to cover the thirty-buck fee.
In three weeks, I made enough to register it ten times over, plus what I bet
on the other races. No small change. It's worth checking out, if you haven't
already.

Reminds me of a horse racing joke. One day a guy who liked to play the
ponies
thought that he really had fate going for him. He woke up with a start in
the middle
of the night and noticed that it was 3:33. When he got into the office his
boss told
him he had to do an audit for a company called Three Continents Imports at
333 Third Avenue, third floor. He took the cab there and paid a fare of
$3.00.
By this time he was beginning to think that this was really his lucky day, so
he took
off early and went to the track. There he checked out the third race, and
imagine
his excitement when he saw that horse 3 was named Three Chances! So he ran
to the window and put $300 on the horse to win. And sure enough, the horse
came
in third...

Exacta Ed, thanks for taking this on. I just read all the entries today, and
found more debate than maxims. I have 3 that are fairly well-known, but few
'cappers spent effort to get to meat of this.
1. Lone speed usually wins, especially with speed favoring bias, especially
in a sprint.
2. Of two horses in a speed duel, one of the two will win more than 50% of
the time (per Jeff Siegel).
3. Rush to the window if your horse breaks through the gate, there's a great
chance it will not win. (It may run in the money. I've only seen one win in 8
years after a gate break and reload.)

practice) 'cause I "saved" it!

My maxims:
There is no such thing as "overstudying" a race.
Always handicap the probable longshots first and work towards the favorites.
(That way you don't get 'sold' on a favorite too soon.)
I guess these aren't so much maxims...oh well...
I think that "Horses for Courses" is the all-time best maxim, and works more
often than all the rest. Fourstardave agrees with me, I am sure...

Maxims-

MAXIMS
- Never bet a maiden favorite who has run 5 or more times
- Never bet a three-year-old highweight going against elders
- Never give up hope with a good two year old in your barn
- Never trust a 2 yr. old before October
- If you feel none of the entrants in a cheap claiming race can win, pass the
race by
- Never bet a horse that flips over on his/her back while making his/her way
from the paddock to the track.
- Never bet a three-year-old highweight going against elders
- Never bet as a favorite a horse being asked to do something he has not done
before (two turns, turf, etc.)
- It is better to bet on weekends than weekdays
- The best time to bet the favorite is in the last race. [as punters try to
recoup their losses by betting longshots]
- Never bet a Grade 1 winner (usually after a layoff) running in an allowance
race.
- Never bet a low, low level claimer who won its last out to repeat
- Never bet on a horse just because it or it's sire is owned by a friend.
- Scared money never wins
- Never bet on a graded stakes winner running in an allowance race
- Never chase your losses
- Do betdrop back (route -> sprint) horse when a) he showed good speed in the
route race b) the race before the route was a sprint and the horse closed
well
- Never bet a horse after a long layoff
- Bet on horses who are first or second time lasix users, especially if past
performance indicates possibility of bleeding or dropping back
- Never bet on a horse to win who has 'seconditis'
- Never bet a horse going up in class against well-established contenders
- Never bet a horse in post positions 11 or 12 to win
- If the name of the horse is too coincidental to believe, put down a couple
bucks on it.
- Always include the weaker half of an uncoupled entry
- Don't bet every race
- Look for jockeys with double calls and select the horse they chose (unless,
of course, the jock rides "first call" for that trainer)1. Lone speed usually
wins, especially on a speed favoring track/bias, especially in a sprint.
- If two horses look to be in a speed duel, one of the two will win more than
50% of the time
- There is no such thing as "overstudying" a race
- Always handicap the probable longshots first and work towards the
favorites

Now that Ed has compiled the list into a working one, I'll be closing this
folder and archiving the messages, plus the list and placing it in the Horse
Sports Library.
Thank you, Ed and my fellow members for this endeavour!
